Named for the currents of air which exit or enter the underground cave system depending on the weather, Wind Cave National Park preserves both a vast expanse of caves as well as acre after acre of prairie and pine forest. Take a guided tour into the different rooms and spaces surrounding the cave entrance. A variety of tours ensures that there are activities for both families with young children and daring explorers to enjoy. See the unusual boxwork cave formations that Wind Cave is known for, with a distinctive honeycomb pattern comprised of delicate calcite fins, as well as portions of the cave that are 300 million years old, making them some of the oldest known cave structures in the world. Take a hike or even just drive through the park to see some of the wonderful above-ground beauty that this national park has to offer. Situated about an hour's drive south of Rapid City, it's easy to make just a day trip to this park, but there is a campground if an overnight stay is desired instead.
